FAQ
While aluminum is highly cost-effective, full-copper dry-type transformers (like our SCB10 Copper Series) are the mandated choice for hyper-critical environments (e.g., Tier IV data centers, large hospitals, underground subways) due to three major factors:
1) Superior Thermal Capacity & Overload: Copper has a significantly higher thermal conductivity and lower electrical resistance than aluminum. This means a copper transformer generates less heat under the same load and can safely sustain heavy overloads for longer periods without the insulation aging prematurely.
2) Immense Short-Circuit Strength: Copper is mechanically harder and stronger than aluminum. When massive electromagnetic forces hit the coils during a grid short-circuit, copper windings are much less likely to deform, ensuring the transformer survives the fault and can be rapidly brought back online.
3) Compact Footprint: Because copper conducts electricity better, the coils can be wound tighter and smaller than aluminum coils carrying the same current. This results in a more compact overall transformer size, which is crucial when fitting a large 1250kVA unit into tight basement electrical rooms.
